How to get the old YouTube layout back

Short answer: YouTube has no switch for it. Every redesign rolls out to everyone, and the old "return to classic" link disappeared in 2020. What you can do is bring back the parts that matter most - the look of the player, a plain progress bar, less rounded chrome - with an extension. Here is what changed, and what can be restored.

What actually changed

2022: the black backgroundDark mode went from #181818 to a near-black #0F0F0F, and buttons became pills.
2023: rounded everythingThumbnails, dialogs and the player got large corner radii; ambient mode lights the page in the video's colours.
2024–2025: the new playerControls were redrawn, the progress bar grew, the mini-player moved, and the watch page keeps reshuffling comments and recommendations.

What you can bring back

  1. The classic player. A skin replaces the play, pause, volume, settings and full-screen icons and the progress bar. The pattern and dark sets on this site are the closest to the flat, pre-2023 look; every skin is free and applies on all videos.
  2. Ambient mode off. Click the gear in the player, then Ambient mode - it is a per-browser switch YouTube still offers.
  3. Lights out instead of ambient. Skins for YouTube player has a cinema mode that darkens the page around the video, the way the old "turn off the lights" did.
  4. Fewer promoted rows. Our Ad Skipper hides sponsored cards from the home feed and the ad clips from Shorts, which removes a good share of the clutter people miss the old layout for.

What cannot be restored

The page grid, the sidebar, the Shorts shelf and the comment order are decided by YouTube's servers and change between accounts and days. Extensions that promise "the 2019 YouTube" re-style the surface and break with every YouTube update; if the look of the player is what you miss, a skin is the part that holds.

Frequently asked questions

Can I switch YouTube back to the old layout officially?

No. YouTube removed the "restore old YouTube" option years ago and rolls redesigns out to everyone. Extensions are the only way to bring parts of the old look back.

Why does my YouTube look different from a friend's?

YouTube tests layout changes on a share of accounts before rolling them out. Two people on the same day can see different versions; there is no setting behind it.

Does a skin bring back the old YouTube?

It brings back the old feel of the player - classic flat buttons, a plain red progress bar, no rounded pills - on every video. The page layout around the player is not changed by a skin.

Will the old layout come back with an extension after a YouTube update?

Extensions that re-style YouTube have to be updated whenever YouTube changes its markup. Ours are updated through the Chrome Web Store automatically.
